Sedimentary Provenance Course

The 2026 Sediment Provenance Course will take place during the 7th, 8th and 9th of September at the Department of Earth Sciences (Campus 2) of the University Coimbra.

This provenance course receives contributions from researchers involved in the Short Course on Sedimentary Provenance Analysis, organized by the Geoscience Center of Göttingen (info on the last event in http://www.sediment.uni-goettingen.de/spa2025), and the Heavy Mineral School, organized by the University of Milano-Bicocca (info on the last event in https://hm-school.disat.unimib.it/hm-school). Since 2023, the courses offered in Göttingen and Milan are planned for every 2 years (odd years). Merged versions of these courses attached to the WGSG events generally take place in even years, such as this one.

This 3-day course will be focused on the most important methodologies used today in the investigation of sediment generation, including bulk geochemistry and mineralogy, petrography, varietal studies, detrital geochronology and thermochronology, image analysis and machine learning, and compositional data analysis.
