7th WGSG COIMBRA
The latest advances on Sediment Generation
The 7th WGSG meeting will be hosted by the University of Coimbra, taking place in its Campus 2, between 10-12 September 2026.

This meeting will serve to promote integrated research on sediment generation, dispersal patterns and accumulation, both in recent and “deep” time.
The meeting will be preceded by a Sedimentary Provenance course and followed by a fieldtrip to the spectacular outcrops and sedimentology of Algarve.
The organising committee includes Pedro Dinis, Pedro Costa and Inês Pereira from the University of Coimbra

This is an IAS-sponsored meeting. Students can apply for an IAS Travel Grant through their profile on the IAS website (https://www.portal.sedimentologists.org/applications/travel-grant/).
The application deadline is June 15. To be entitled to this IAS support, applicants must give an oral or poster presentation as the first author.
Do you want to present your work as oral or poster communication at the 7th WGSG? A form for abstract submission will be available before May 2026. Deadline for abstract submission is the 1st of June.
Sediment Provenance Course
The Sediment Provenance Course will take place on 7-9 September, immediately preceding the main conference of the 7th WGSG, at the Department of Earth Sciences (Rua Sílvio Lima, Central Building, Campus 2 of the University Coimbra).
This 3-day course will be focused on the most important methodologies used today in the investigation of sediment generation, including bulk geochemistry and mineralogy, petrography, varietal studies, detrital geochronology and thermochronology, image analysis and machine learning, and compositional data analysis.

Field Trip
The post-meeting field trip will take place between the 12th and 14th of September 2026. Participants will visit sites along the Algarve coast, ranging from the sediment starved and cliffed coast of the western Algarve to the sand-abundant barrier coast of the central-eastern Algarve.
The field trip will focus on sites between Sagres and Albufeira. In the western Sagres–Lagos sector, there is a tectono-stratigraphic record of rifting from the Triassic to the latest Early Cretaceous. The stratigraphic sequences are condensed, allowing the identification of three rifting phases (Triassic–Early Jurassic, Middle Jurassic, and Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous) and the tectonic inversion. Within this geological context, this field trip also provides an opportunity to discuss sediment provenance studies conducted on sandy deposits related to the 1755 CE and the app. 3600 BP tsunamis. Interpretations of morphological, sedimentological and chronological data obtained in coastal lowlands and shallow offshore areas of the Algarve will be presented in the field. Sites to be visited are among the "classic" examples of tsunami investigation in Earth Sciences.

Fees include: transport, 2 nights' accommodation, breakfast and lunch. Covered accommodation in shared dormitories with 4 to 8 places. Private bedrooms can be provided upon request with additional costs and depending on local availability.
Participation in the field trip is only open to participants in the 7th WGSG meeting (you will need to register for the Meeting) and will only take place with a minimum number of participants.
